Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia or the Story of a table wine
The story begins In the 1920s, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a "thoroughbred" wine for him, as for all the aristocracy of the time, his ideal wine was Bordeaux Graves style.
Settling in the 1940s on Tenuta San Guido, he experimented with several French varietals and concluded that Cabernet had the bouquet he was looking for.
The innovative decision to plant the Cabernet Sauvignon variety at Tenuta San Guido was partly due to the similarity that Mario Incisa had noticed between the Tuscan soil and that of Graves in Bordeaux.
The first vintages of Marchese were not warmly received, critics accustomed to the lightness of local wines were not encouraging; they were not paying attention to the fact that wines made from the more complex Cabernet Sauvignon grape would need more time to mature and develop.
Thus, from 1948 to 1967, Sassicaia remained a strictly private affair, only to be consumed at Tenuta San Guido.
Marketed in 1968 for the first time, the welcome was worthy of a premier cru of Bordeaux.
Considered as a "Table Wine" until 1994, (due to its planting), the year when it passed into the designation "DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia".
