Wonderwoman by Ciro Quintana
This work, entitled Wonderwoman, emphasizes once again, the important role women play in Cuban society. In the center and top of the painting the viewer is confronted with the tension between the difficulties of life on the island and the struggle against American influence; an American Superwoman-like figure draped in a bodice of Cuban colours oozes energy and courage.
At the bottom of the painting, we can see a self-portrait of the artist, knife in hand ready to defend Wonderwoman, both from the hardships of life in Cuba and the influences of the American way of life that seeks to lead Cuban women down the wrong path shall we say.
