In a week's time, on February 14, we will celebrate Valentine's Day. Its origins are said to date back to ancient Rome but remain rather unclear. However, like many Western holidays, Valentine's Day was imported to Japan during the second half of the 20th century. While in the West, tradition dictates that it is the men who give a gift to their partner, in Japan it is the women who spoil the men, by offering them...chocolate!
Actually, this Japanese tradition implies several different types of chocolate. The "giri-choco", which can be translated as "courtesy chocolate", is the one offered to men of the circle, such as work colleagues, for example. Then the "honmei-choco" or "destiny chocolate" is offered to the dearest ones. Finally, more recently, the "jibun-choco", the "chocolate for oneself", that single people offer to themselves, has appeared.
You will have understood it, whether you are a woman or a man, from East or West, Valentine's Day is an excellent opportunity to delight your taste buds with chocolate!
