Côte-Rôtie wines from E. Guigal
Treasures that are born in the very heart of the most legendary plots of the Maison.
Planted on hillsides by the Romans 24 centuries ago, the Côte-Rôtie vineyard is located on the right bank of the Rhône, facing the city of Vienne, south of Lyon.
Today, this famous vineyard is divided between the Côte Brune, upstream from the Reynard stream, and the Côte Blonde downstream. Composed almost exclusively of Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful and intense wine. The Côte Blonde, on the other hand, is more subtle thanks to the presence of Viognier, which compliments the Syrah.
The Domaine Guigal presented today is a significant player, with an undisputed reputation from its appellation. It was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and the cradle of this prestigious appellation. It is home to a unique vineyard where vines and wine have is celebrated for more than 2000 years.
In 1961, at the age of 17, Marcel Guigal, Etienne's son, took over the reins of the House alongside his father, who suddenly lost his eyesight. He was joined in 1973 by his wife Bernadette, and together they worked to develop the family estate. In 1975, their son Philippe was born, now an oenologist. Accompanied by his wife Eve, he represents the third generation and continues the family tradition in the creation of the Great Wines of the Rhone Valley. Today, Marcel and then Philippe and their respective wives are the guardians of this exceptional estate combining history, devotion, and sharing.
1995 is marked by the acquisition of the famous Château d'Ampuis. This late 12th-century fortified house was renovated over the centuries as a renaissance-style chateau. Bordered by the Rhone, this residence now classified as a Historical Monument has welcomed many kings of France!
Proper viticulture listens to nature and has the preservation and respect for nourishing the earth at the heart of the vineyard's requirements. Shaping and maintaining the terraces, pruning, and caring for the vines, along with constant attention, is not only needed but required.
In the cellar, the creation of an excellent wine requires the mastery of ancestral gestures. Each step of the vinification process is meticulously carried out using both modern and artisanal techniques. The wines, then need prolonged maturing in the oak barrels made by the estates' very own cooperage.
