Hoyo de Monterrey Churchills Vintage 2008
A balanced bouquet of flavours!
While the Hoyo de Monterrey brand is known for its remarkable Double Coronas, its prestigious Epicure line, the elegance of its Le Hoyo series or for being avant-garde introducing the Petit Robusto in 2005, there’s also a place for the Churchills. It is one of the oldest cigars in its catalogue but has unfortunately been withdrawn in 2012.
Today we propose you to discover this incredibly elegant cigar, the Hoyo de Monterrey Churchills Vintage from 2008.
Before lighting it up, let’s return back to the origins of the vitola. The Churchills is a Julieta No.2 with a 47 cepo and is 178 mm long. Its creation is attributed to Romeo y Julieta in the early 1900s. According to the legend, it was originally rolled for the French statesman Georges Clemenceau. The cigar then joined the regular production under the name Clemenceaus after the First World War until the 1980s.
At the same time, during the Second World War, the Romeo y Julieta factory was producing a large quantity of Clemenceaus with a personalized band exclusively for Sir Winston Churchill. The Clemenceaus became his favourite cigar. Following his historic visit to the Romeo y Julieta factory in 1947, the brand renamed the Clemenceaus "Churchill" in his honour. This led to an increase in popularity for this vitola, as all aficionados were looking for the favourite cigar of the British statesman. The Churchill then became a very popular vitola and other brands, such as Hoyo de Monterrey, included it in the catalogue.
So let's proceed to tasting this famous cigar, which should be enjoyed with complete peace of mind in order to get the most of its rich flavours.
The embrace is delicate bringing the first woody and vegetal puffs. Being simple but magnificently balanced, this first third is a promising introduction to the next stage. A slight resistance to the draw perfectly matches this relatively soft cigar.
The second third comes along with notes of cocoa and a hint of liquorice, a perfect alliance with an espresso. The last third brings a rather spicy finish.
This Hoyo de Monterrey Churchills Vintage offers a great experience of about an hour and a half, the time needed for all the flavours to fully develop on the palate.
Like all vintage cigars, it is less strong, free of ammonia, delicate and very elegant. The characteristic blend of the Hoyo de Monterrey and its light taste are only sublimated by ageing.
