Rhum J. Bally - Millésime 1966
An old agricultural rum from the creator of Martinique's first vintage rums!
J. Bally rum takes its origins from Carbet, a municipality located in the north of Martinique, not far from Montagne Pelée. Here Baron de Lajus founded the Habitation de Lajus in 1774. At that time, the property enjoyed a manor house and a small sugar farm established on this volcanic soil, which was ideal for sugar cane production.
After having been spared by the various eruptive crises of Montagne Pelée, a volcano which marks the landscape as much as the history of Martinique, the Habitation de Lajus was acquired in 1917 by Jacques Bally. A son of a solicitor, a graduate of the Central School of Arts and Manufactures, one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering schools in France, he undertook the restoration of the Lajus estate. To replace the sugar activity, he installed a new distillation column and a steam engine and launched the first in Martinique distillery to produce an old rum. The first vintage rums in A.O.C. Martinique date back to 1929 and it is the oldest vintage of J. Bally rums.
In addition to his training as an engineer, Jacques Bally also studied in Cognac during which he learned the ancestral techniques for making Cognac and fine spirits. He decided to apply those techniques to his rums. He was the first to believe in the quality of rums. Jacques Bally was a true forerunner in being the first to have the intuition and genius to let his rums age in barrels.
A pioneer in his techniques, he was also an innovator in packaging. He invented in the 1930s the famous pyramid bottle in collaboration with Saint-Gobain. This bottle made J. Bally rums famous throughout the world.
Later, in 1987, the J. Bally distillery was transferred to Le François within the Clément distillery. Then, in 1996, the J. Bally distillery was transferred again, this time to the Saint-James distillery in Sainte-Marie. Saint-James is still today in charge of the production of the J. Bally rums and is also in charge of their ageing.
