Bérêche & Fils Campania Remensis - Extra Brut Rosé
A great champagne resulting from a close relationship between men and their vines.
The history of the wine estate began in the middle of the 19th century, in 1847, when Albert Bérêche, a coffee maker of Hungarian origin, settled in Champagne. At the same time as settling there, the man acquired three hectares of vines to the north-west of the Montagne de Reims, which he cultivated himself. All of his production was then sold to the Maison Canard-Duchêne, which was, at the time, one of the two most important Champagne Houses alongside Pommery.
As soon as he arrived on the family estate, Léon, Albert Bérêche's son, decided to develop wine-growing. Together with his wife, Cécile Quenardel, from a large Champagne family, they expanded the estate and, with their first and only vintage of brut wine, won a silver medal in Paris in 1895.
Later, after serving France during the First World War, Léon decided to offer a 5% discount on his vintages to all his trench comrades, the old poilus. This allowed the estate to start marketing its wine, without depending on trading houses. His son, Pierre, took up the torch and also increased the size of the estate. Developing their activity with visiting customers, they marketed more and more vintages in their own name, until they definitively broke the trading contract with Canard-Duchêne. The name "Bérêche & Fils" was then well and truly established as a Champagne House.
Then came Jean-Pierre and Catherine, Pierre's children, who made up the 4th generation of Bérêche at the head of the family estate. In 1978, like their elders, they decided to increase production. Thus nearly 80,000 bottles were produced each year from the estate's cellars.
In 2003, Jean-Pierre and Catherine decided to start a process of integrated viticulture. From then on, all interventions during the vegetative season are regulated according to the threshold of tolerance to the disease, no treatment is systematic. Today, the estate, which extends over 9 hectares, is characterised by exemplary viticulture, serving expressive, characterful champagnes resulting from selections and plot-based vinification.
This is the culmination of rigorous family work, inherited by Raphaël and Vincent, the 5th generation of Bérêche at the head of the estate. Generally recognised as the most ambitious winegrowers in Champagne, they perpetuate the work, initiated by their father Jean-Pierre, by maintaining a close relationship with their vines. For them, they are the guarantors of their wines, the starting point of every subtlety. In their quest for the right taste, they guide the land, accompany it. The wine must transfigure these great terroirs of Champagne in the glass. The vines are pruned and maintained with great sensitivity, respecting the personality of each vine.
The cuvée we are presenting today, Campania Remensis, is a magnificent illustration of this close relationship between these men and their vines.
Made from vines that are 40 years old, this cuvée is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Meunier, all with a touch of Champagne red wine. After 36 months of ageing, the blend is dosed in Extra Brut in order to obtain a pure champagne.
In the glass, this great champagne offers aromas of raspberry, cherry and vine peach, with hints of grapefruit. Very pure, the palate is full and deep, both vinous and acidic.
Ideally served at 10°C with a pork-based dish or fish such as salmon or tuna, Campania Remensis will convey the full expression of the Champagne terroir. The 2012 harvest, from which this bottle is made, will have offered only 5,298 bottles. With it, Raphaël and Vincent offer us an accomplished cuvée in the best Champagne expression as the estate has known how to do so well for several generations now.
