Cohiba Siglo VI Gran Reserva Cosecha 2003
Back in 2009, the Gran Reserva programme welcomed the first vitola in its history.
Since 2009, when the programme was launched, Habanos S.A. has selected an emblematic vitola from one of the global brands every odd year. The "Gran Reserva" are launched every odd year during the Festival del Habano. Since 2012, even-numbered years have been dedicated to the Reserva programme, launched in 2003. Before 2012, the rhythm of Reserva cigar releases was more random with 5 cigars in 2003 and none in 2010 for example. Released in 2009, the Cohiba Gran Reserva was the very first Gran Reserva realesed by Habanos S.A.
In order to be worthy of the prestigious "Gran Reserva" distinction, the cigars, although from the brand's regular production, are only made from carefully selected Vuelta Abajo tobacco leaves that have undergone a fermentation process of at least five years (compared to three years for the Reserva). Thus, this Cohiba Siglo VI Gran Reserva, released in 2009, is made with leaves harvested in 2003: Cosecha 2003.
The precious leaves were harvested in the famous regions of San Juan y Martínez and San Luis. After their five years of care, they were entrusted to the expert hands of the Torecedors of the famous Cohiba factory: El Laguito.
Like all the prestigious Gran Reserva vitolas, this particular Cohiba Siglo VI is dressed with a second black and gold band on which the initials G and R are stamped. It is thus easy to distinguish it from the standard version of which it takes the measurements and the same cepo. The logo formed by the initials also appears on the characteristic box, covered with a glossy black lacquer. The production of the Cohiba Siglo VI Gran Reserva is limited to only 5,000 boxes of 15 units.
Let us proceed to the tasting of this rarity. The setting on fire of a Gran Reserva is always an event.
It seems needless to say that thanks to all the attention this Siglo VI has received, its construction and plasticity are absolutely perfect.
When raw, we perceive woody notes with a slightly sweet touch. From the first puffs, the woody notes perceived before lighting are clearly present. Note the arrival of pepper and spices with honeyed notes. A bouquet that is difficult to describe, but remarkably complex. An incredible amount of rich flavours coexist together, without any of them taking over. The balance is surgical, the flavours complement each other but seem to change with each puff.
Coffee, cedar wood, walnut, citrus, leather, a veritable ball of flavours that come and go as the tasting progresses.
The end of the cigar does not clearly offer a rise in power. On the contrary, the spicy and peppery notes give way to cocoa flavours. Like the gourmet after a gourmet meal, these last few centimetres crown one of the most exceptional taste experiences we have had.
If there is no such thing as a perfect cigar, the Siglo VI Gran Reserva seems to be truly perfect. It offers an exceptionally harmonious, elegant and refined tasting experience.
The Siglo VI Gran Reserva is an extraordinary cigar. Produced by the most prestigious Cuban cigar brand in the most prestigious Habanos programme, it is the object of all the envy. The inaugural vitola of the programme, it is also the oldest Gran Reserva in the world, which unfortunately has become rarefied over time.
