Art for the 170 Anniversary of the Partagás Factory
108 Romeo y Julieta Pirámides Añejados in a work of art.
Built in 1845, the famous Real Fábrica de Tabaco Partagás located in the heart of Havana, behind the Capitolio, celebrated its 170th anniversary in 2015. This factory, probably one of the most renowned, is to this day also the oldest one in Cuba still active.
To celebrate the event, the Cuban art gallery Sikerei decided to reunite twenty contemporary Cuban artists to produce a limited edition of 20 numbered humidors.
This unique collection of humidors, originally launched exclusively for the national market, was presented to a handful of guests at an event held on November 19, 2015 in La Casa del Habano Partagás, located on the ground floor of the famous Partagás Factory.
The humidors were crafted from Cuban cedar and designed to accommodate four drawers. Three for the cigars, offering a capacity of about a hundred vitolas and one drawer for the humidification system. Each of the twenty artists were given the opportunity to fully express their individual creativity and we are proud to present you today two out of the 20 exquisite humidors.
The first, in the background of the photo, was painted by the artist Eduardo Miguel Martínez Rodríguez.
A graduate of the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, this artist interprets in a spiritual way man's interaction with nature throughout the ages, with an emphasis on the Middle Age and the Renaissance.
When contemplating his work, we can tell that he has studied in detail different artistic techniques used during the 14th and 15th centuries (Renaissance period) up to the 18th century. From the preparation of the canvases, all through the architecture hidden in the paintings, to mastering the subtle art of playing with light.
This alchemy offers us a humidor that captures humanity, mysticism, love and spirituality, which are some of the impressions nicely summarizing the beautiful work of this artist.
The second humidor, in the foreground of the photo, is the work of the artist Roberto González.
Representing his own idea of the world of cigars, this humidor comes straight out of the artist's vivid imagination. Executed without any prior sketching, but simply by following his inner guidance, the rhythm of his gestures, while layer after layer the brush performs the miracle of an artist being totally in his flow. Under the gaze of the viewer it can bring us back to the extravagances of Dalf, the imaginative allures of Chagall, the metaphysics of De Chirico and even the surrealism of Magritte.
Minimalist, conceptual, surrealist, sprinkled with a touch of humor and above all, with an open mind and eyes wide open to the human environment, with an excellent mastery of colors and perspectives, these are the ingredients that make him one of the most authentic artists of his time.
Inside each of these two works of art are 108 Romeo y Julieta Pirámides Habanos Añejados dressed in a personalized triple band. The brand's standard ring, a second one stamped "Añejado" and a third one, larger band with the logo of the 170th anniversary of the Partagás factory. These Piramides (52 x 156 mm) "Añejados" have been stored between 5 and 8 years in optimal conditions in Cuba. Thanks to this long conservation period, they have acquired a complexity that enhances and complements the original character of the Romeo y Julieta blend.
Each humidor of this limited series is a true work of art, a gentle combination of curves and lines that rise up in search of a new space, giving a particular personality and appeal to these exquisite pieces that have served as the basis for expressing the poetry of 20 Cuban artists.
Thanks to Angel Miranda Battle from Sikerei Gallery for his contribution.
