Romeo y Julieta Hidalgos
The most important ring gauge in regular production in the history of Habanos.
Following the example of Montecristo and its Línea 1935 and Cohiba with its Maduro 5 line, Romeo y Julieta has now added a new line to its regular catalogue: the Línea de Oro.
The Cohiba brand currently offers four different lines: the Linea Classica, the Línea 1492, the Maduro 5 line and the Behike line (BHK), the Línea de Oro, which can be translated as the "golden line" in French, is the first distinctive line in the history of Romeo y Julieta.
Its presentation took place during the XXII Festival del Habano in 2020, one of the highlights of which was the celebration of the 145th anniversary of the Romeo y Julieta brand.
Consisting of three new formats, for the brand and for Habanos and fully in line with new consumer trends, Línea de Oro complements the brand's already extensive vitolaro.
The first and shortest of these is called Hidalgos. It introduces the new eponymous vitola, "Hidalgos", measuring 125 mm in length with a 57 ring gauge. Note that 57 is now the largest cepo in standard production in the Habanos catalogue.
Next comes Nobles, a new figurado format, called Triangulares, measuring 135 mm long for a 56 cepo.
And finally the Dianas, which introduces the new Damas vitola, offering a length of 145 mm for a 52 cepo.
Each of these three vitolas enjoy a very polished presentation, living up to the high standards of the brand. Indeed, each Línea de Oro cigar is dressed in a double golden band. The main one is derived from the brand's standard ring and reminds us in some respects of the band found on the Romeo y Julieta Grand Churchills. In addition to being personalised with the name of the vitola it dresses, this new band incorporates holographic elements, similar to those found on the Cohiba rings since 2014.
The second band in golden as well, to be found at the foot of the cigar, bears the capture "Línea de Oro".
Each of these three new cigars are presented in an elegant, high-quality box containing 20 pieces. The exterior of each box is made of sycamore wood with a high-gloss, blood-red lacquer finish that reveals the characteristic grain of this type of wood. The sides of the upper and lower parts are enhanced with a golden frieze. And finally, the top is embellished with a golden relief plate representing Romeo and Julieta at the classic balcony scene decorated with the various gold medal awards.
Now that the context of this new Línea de Oro has been described, let's proceed to the tasting of the Hidalgos, with those generous measurements they definately invite for a treat.
Habanos describes the tobacco blend as medium to strong, a novelty for the brand that is usually considered medium strong. Let's see what our Master in Habanos, Mourade Hendor has to say.
"The start is very delicate and pastry-like, with hazelnut and brioche. A decidedly sweet and greedy start to the tasting. Once the opening is over, the roasted coffee comes into play with a slightly spicy background, certainly announcing a rise in power.
Very well executed, an ideal construction of a very nice, well layered, compact white ash.
Density and complexity are dominant, touch of peanut and a pronounced earthiness with sandalwood notes, a lot of finesse for sure!
Coffee grounds and a floral touch arrive in retro olfaction.
The third part clearly confirms the second by rising its intensifity, satiating, with the conclusion that this cigar is a perfect choice!"
