Clase Azul Tequila Reposado

A symbol of Mexican tradition and culture.

Tequila is a brandy produced exclusively in Mexico from Agave, a succulent plant easily recognisable by its fleshy leaves, adorned with sharp teeth and ending in a thorn, one we better beware of as one can get seriously hurt. In order to obtain the name "tequila", production must take place in the free and sovereign state of Jalisco, located on the Pacific Ocean shore, and in some other municipalities in the states of Nayarit, Michoacán, Guanajuato and Tamaulipas.

Clase Azul is the first brand to offer this particular spirit in a premium version. While many of us drank tequila in shots during our studies, few of us probably have yet tasted this exceptional tequila as we would a rum or whiskey.

Clase Azul aims to change stereotypes by reviving this spirit, which is deeply rooted in Mexican culture and tradition. The brand was founded in 2000 by Arturo Lomeli, a Mexican who grew up in Guadalajara, in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

After university, he opened a bar, but soon realised that he didn't like the environment. In 1997, he decided to team up with a childhood friend, Hugo Luna Vazquez, to produce and sell a pomegranate punch, called "La Pinta". The following year, they decided to market their first tequila, "El Teporocho". It soon became clear that both products were commercial failures.

In order to transform this flop into a success, the two friends decided to return to school and properly study marketing. As soon as they graduated, Arturo Lomeli realised that he had to start over again and integrate, among other things, a new branding and packaging. Hugo Luna Vazquez, who did not believe in the project's revival, left Arturo alone in his new project. This separation however was not definitive.

The following year, Arturo studied ceramic arts and tequila making. From then on, the idea of producing high-quality tequila and offering it in beautiful bottles became very obvious. All that remained was to find the right name for this beautiful project.

At the end of the 1990s, "Azul Tequila", a television series broadcast in Mexico, was a hit. Among the fans was Arturo Lomeli, who decided to name his tequila "Azul", which translates from Spanish as "blue". He went to Mexico City to register the name, but it was already taken. So he added the word "Clase", class in English, which all of a sudden came into his mind, and so Clase Azul was born. The first bottle of Clase Azul tequila was launched in 2000.

Clase Azul Resposado tequila is made from 100% agave tequilana weber, known as blue agave, produced in one of the highest altitude locations in the state of Jalisco, near the town of Jesús María. The climate and soil of these highlands give this exceptional tequila its unique taste. On the farm, each plant is cultivated for 6 to 8 years.

Once harvested, the organic agave then requires about 72 hours of cooking process in old traditional brick ovens. This technique gives the kernel a unique sweetness, easily noticeable by the complexity of the aroma and flavour.

The kernel then is crushed to extract all the juices and the fermentation process begins, induced by an exclusive in-house yeast. The maturation takes place in the village of Jesús Maria, where it can get as cold as 5°C at night. After several days, the tequila is then distilled twice, with a large cut of "heads" and "tails" in order to keep only the heart and thus obtain the highest possible quality.

After distillation, the tequila is stored for 8 months in carefully selected American oak barrels. This phase, "Reposado" meaning rested, gives this tequila its beautiful, intense amber colour and an amazing bouquet of flavours of cooked agave, wood, fruits, vanilla and caramel.

After the long manufacturing and maturation process, this precious tequila finally is transferred into these beautiful ceramic decanters with unique cobalt blue decorations. Inspired by traditional Mexican values, each decanter is handmade and painted by craftsmen in the small town of Santa María Canchesda. These 350 skilled workers carve and paint them individually, using the ancient techniques of the Mazahua people. They are so precious that when empty, they can be used as lamp bases, candle holders or vases. Each "feather-shaped" decanter is a unique work of art that contains the art of the Mexican ancestors and their thousand-year-old heritage. Authenticity is the watchword at Clase Azul.

Every day, the Clase Azul teams work with the ambition to highlight the beauty of Mexico and its traditions. The magic of Clase Azul transcends the exceptional quality of its tequila. Its beautiful ceramic decanter is handcrafted and painted by Mexican artisans, making each one unique. Clase Azul Tequila Reposado is a true symbol of Mexican tradition and culture.
