Sancho Panza Belicosos
The one and only cigar in the brand's regular catalogue, still in production to date.
Following the discontinuation of the Non Plus in 2019, the regular Sancho Panza catalogue now offers only one cigar, the Sancho Panza Belicosos, which we will taste together today.
However, before we do that, here is a short presentation of the vitola. The Belicosos is a Campanas belonging to the large Pyramid family. These cigars are characterised by a cut foot, like the Parejos, but with a pointed head. These cigars are generally very popular with aficionados because the shape of their head allows the complex flavours of the cigar to be concentrated before being released to the palate.
Let’s go back to the Campanas. This module was added to the regular catalogue of four brands that continue to this day their production: Sancho Panza, with the Belicosos, San Cristóbal de la Habana with La Punta, Romeo y Julieta with the Belicosos and Bolívar with the Belicosos Finos. The latter is undoubtedly one of the most famous cigars in the Bolívar catalogue as it is the only Figurado and has the reputation of being the spiciest cigar of the brand.
The growing popularity of this vitola has prompted Habanos to increasingly use it in special productions such as Edición Regional or Edición Limitada as in 2019 with the release of the Ramón Allones Allones No. 2.
Now that the context is properly set, let's proceed with the tasting. As with all the brand's vitolas, the band, very sleek and rather thin, leaves the field open to admire the remarkable construction. A magnificent cap, slightly oily with a hint of rusticity well represented by some incorporated veins. The result shows a true know-how of a proper tobacco use of such beautiful quality.
The raw draught brings forth a delicate milk chocolate taste and a beautiful hay aroma, soft and sweet. A rather different register from what we are used to find at Sancho Panza. Let's continue with the lighting. The first puffs are easy to draw, perhaps almost a little too easy, but the filling is good and homogeneous, so no worries.
The first part of the cigar reveals an enhanced softness which eventually evolves into tasty woody, caramelized and herbaceous notes. Already at this stage a characteristic hint of saltiness begins to appear, much to our delight.
As the tasting progresses, we notice a slight rise in power, supported by delicate touches of sweet spices, dry grass and chocolate. This is a beautiful display of flavours delicately contained by a creamy backdrop.
In terms of flavours, the Belicosos is not too far from its big brother Sancho, which we tasted a few months ago. Light, herbal and woody flavours with a medium tobacco taste mixed with a subtle sweetness and saltiness, all the ingredients reunited to enjoy a perfect balance. A sweetness that will tend to become more pronounced as the cigar ages. Whatever its age though, the Belicosos offers a very smooth and creamy taste, without forgetting the coveted little salt deposit left on the lips. Its small size makes it easy to enjoy, even in the middle of the day.
Compared to its regular Campanas counterparts, it is undoubtedly the smoothest, which makes it more accessible and perhaps also, more elegant. It is not overly complex but has an excellent aromatic profile. Actually, so indulging that we almost could get our fingers burnt.
Despite its average strength, this Belicosos will age extremely well over time. It is a real must-have in your humidor and will always be perfect for any occasion.
