A cigar celebrating two major milestones in the history of the House.
For this new edition of the Grauer Journal, we will go to new lands and discover an exclusive Brazilian puro. In the cigar industry, this is still an unknown territory, but not for the Villiger company, which is already behind several Brazilian lines. In 2014, it launched Tobajara, and then in 2020, "Villiger do Brasil" which is composed of two blends from the South American country.
However, the cigar we are interested in today does not pay tribute to Brazil, but to a major event, it celebrates both the 90th birthday of Heinrich Villiger, the head of Villiger and the anniversary of the German subsidiary "Villiger Söhne", founded by Louise Villiger, his grandmother, 110 years ago. This foundation finds its home in Waldshut-Tiengen and introduces Swiss quality to the international tobacco market.
This limited edition is a hymn to the philosophy and passion for tobacco that the Villiger family is maintaining for 135 years of tradition and success.
The chosen vitola for the "Villiger Anniversary 2020" is an impressive Toro (51 x 155 mm), a size worthy of this event. As mentioned, it is composed of an all-Brazilian blend, a tobacco that has generated a lot of interest in the past and that turns out to be perfect for this "Puro". Unfortunately, no other information was communicated by Villiger about it. While the construction of a factory dedicated to the production of handmade cigars in Brazil began in 2013, the exact composition of the cigar remains a secret to this day. However, the brilliance of the Brazilian wrapper is striking.
This collection joins the brand's catalog of limited editions. Available in only 1000 boxes of 10 units for the world, it is the subject of great rarity!
Concerning the packaging, from the box to the cigar wrapper, nothing has been left to chance: the 10 vitolas are arranged in an elegant varnished wooden box. On the top, the name of the brand does not go unnoticed, it is written in gold: "Villiger The World of Cigars". The finishes such as the latch or the edition number ranging from 0001 to 1000, which every "Limitada" box is associated to, are also gold. Upon opening, the logo appears on the upper part of the box.
To contemplate the cigars, you will have to remove them from their individual packaging decorated with the brand's emblem. They are dressed in a double ring with the characteristic colors of the line, black and gold. The main ring is stamped with the Villiger logo while the second ring is attached to the foot of the cigar and bears Heinrich Villiger's handwritten signature.
With the background of this exclusive series mentioned, let's proceed to the tasting of the Villiger Anniversary 2020: this cigar benefits from a perfect construction. Raw, the Colorado Claro wrapper and the foot of the cigar reveal rich aromas of roasted nuts, persimmons and aged cedar, which make the Brazilian blend all the more intriguing.
Once lit, this Toro surprises us with the strength of its spices and its peppery taste, but after a few minutes of tasting, softer and subtle notes of cedar and leather take over, revealing the medium bodied profile of the vitola. A fruity nuance accompanies it, joined by a creamy touch from the second third.
The finish promises to be more full-bodied, with pepper resurfacing, complemented by nutty, coffee and earthy flavors. The draw and volume of smoke offer a really pleasant overall experience, with a rather slow burn offering a tasting of over 2 hours.
This cigar is truly a beautiful tribute to the 110-year heritage of "Villiger Söhne" and to the 90th birthday of Heinrich Villiger, the oldest cigar entrepreneur still in business and one of the leading experts in the world of tobacco.
