Glenfiddich Suspended Time 30 Years
A masterpiece from Scotland aged for three decades.
For 20 years, William Grant nurtured the dream of making the best whisky in the valley. In the summer of 1886, with the help of his seven sons and two daughters, William Grant set about realising his lifelong dream. Together, they began to build a distillery, stone by stone.
William Grant & Sons is an independent Scottish family company dedicated to the distillation and distribution of Scotch whisky and other spirits. Founded in 1886 by William Grant, it is now run by the founder's descendants. As the largest family business in Scotch whisky, it is often known by the short names of 'W. Grant & Sons" or simply "Grant's", in reference to their famous blend of the same name.
With a market share of 10.4%, William Grant & Sons is the third largest Scotch whisky producer, after Diageo and Pernod Ricard. The company is also a member of the Scotch Whisky Association.
It was in Dufftown in 1886 that William Grant laid the foundation stone for his Glenfiddich distillery. In 1892, William Grant & Sons acquired a second distillery nearby, at Balvenie. This led in 1898 to the creation of the company's first blend, Grant's, which brought together only the whiskies produced by these two distilleries. In 1997, William Grant & Sons joined forces with the Robertson family (The Edrington Group) to found a new company, Highland Distillers.
William Grant & Sons has played a pioneering role in the world of whisky. It was the first brand to export its production, introducing a revolutionary bottle design in the 1950s with its triangular shape, which has become emblematic to this day. In the 1960s, it was also the first to market a 10-year-old single malt: the Glenfiddich. The company also opened its distilleries to visitors by creating a public visitor centre at Glenfiddich.
Distilleries owned by William Grant & Sons include Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Kininvie, Girvan (grain distillery), Hendrick's, Tullamore DEW, Tuthilltown (bourbon distillery) and Convalmore, used as a warehouse for maturing Glenfiddich. The company's main brands are Glenfiddich, the world's best-selling single malt with a market share of 17.37%, and Grant's, which ranks fourth in global blended sales. Other notable brands include The Balvenie, Hendrick's Gin, Monkey Shoulder, and Tullamore DEW.
