Domaine Denis Mortet
Family-owned domain, that is working 50% organically and 50% reasonably.
Domaine Denis Mortet is a wine estate located in Burgundy, France. It was managed by Denis Mortet, a renowned winemaker, until his «brutal disappearance» in 2006. Since then, the estate has been managed by his son, Arnaud Mortet, who has successfully pursued his father’s work.
The estate is mainly known for its high-quality red wines, especially those produced from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The vines of the estate are planted on clay-limestone soils, which gives the wines a unique expression of the Burgundian terroir.
The wines of Domaine Denis Mortet are often described as elegant, complex and expressive, with great finesse and a nice concentration of fruits. They reflect the know-how and commitment of the Mortet family to produce wines of excellence.
Since his humble beginnings in 1956, Charles Mortet has started the business with one hectare of vines.
Over the years, the Mortet family has committed to cultivating and maintaining a multitude of plots. When his son Denis took over in 1992, the estate already had 4.5 hectares spread over the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot. In 1993, Denis and his wife Laurence took over a 4-hectare estate comprising plots of Premier Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, village plots located in En Motrot, Au Vellé and En Champs, as well as a plot in Marsannay at Les Longeroies.
Then, they continued to acquire new plots, including one located En Combe du Dessus in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1997, a plot of Chambertin Grand Cru in 1999, and several other plots in 2000, including En Derée village and some plots of Premier Cru. Since the takeover of the estate in 2006 by Laurence and Arnaud Mortet, it has experienced a remarkable expansion, adding five additional hectares to its original area.
Today, their vineyard is managed by Laurence, and her children Arnaud and Clémence, and now extends from Daix, on the Dijon plateau, to Vougeot.
Thanks to the work of his father, Arnaud did not have to build the whole base of viticulture like many other young winemakers, he had a solid base to work well from the start. Moreover, over time, experience, observation and his convictions, Arnaud has been able to refine this base by going towards the best.
Thus, here are the few practices that Arnaud has implemented in their vineyard, to preserve the quality of the grapes and respect the environment.
First, he and the team significantly reduced ploughing. This approach allows them to preserve the structure of the soil and limit the release of nitrogen, resulting in smaller grapes. According to him, small berries are more interesting than large ones because they offer a better juice/material ratio.
Next, they encourage the growth of a grass called a murre, which grows naturally and densely without causing damage to the vine. This practice helps to maintain a natural balance in the vineyard.
In addition, their approach to viticulture has changed significantly about phytosanitary treatments. Today, Arnaud is proud to work 50% organically and 50% reasonably, especially during the flowering period, using minimal doses.
