Whisky The Dalmore

A regal legacy of whisky craftsmanship and innovation.

The Dalmore distillery was founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, an adventurous merchant determined to create an excellent single malt whisky. It is located on the north bank of the Cromarty Firth, near the town of Alness in Scotland. Over the years it has passed through a number of owners, but is currently owned by Whyte & Mackay.

With a history stretching back over 180 years, Dalmore has built its reputation on preserving a unique royal heritage.

This can be seen in the 12-point stag emblem that proudly adorns every bottle of The Dalmore. This symbol bears witness to the distillery's royal heritage, dating back to 1263, when Colin de Kintail, the first head of the Mackenzie clan, received this honour after saving the life of King Alexander III of Scotland from a charging stag. In 1867, descendants of the Mackenzie clan took control of the distillery and introduced the stag as a symbol of unrivalled quality.

The distillery is currently closed to visitors for refurbishment, but will reopen at the end of 2024, offering whisky lovers an immersive experience into its world.

Over the years, the current Master Whisky Maker, Gregg Glass, has maintained excellence and innovation in the making of Dalmore whiskies, and is renowned for combining tradition with exciting new ideas and whisky innovation. In 2023, he was honoured as Master Distiller of the Year at the Global Icons of Whisky Awards, a testament to his prodigious talent. Gregg works in partnership with Master Distiller Richard Paterson OBE, a pioneer in the art of cask conservation and a leading figure in the whisky industry. Richard has unrivalled expertise and intimate knowledge of rare and precious casks. This has enabled The Dalmore to produce truly iconic expressions, setting the standard for single malt whisky. For over five decades, Richard has strived to push the boundaries of what is possible in whisky production, creating a collection of Dalmore whiskies of remarkable quality.

In terms of the production process, Dalmore products are made from malted barley and distilled in large copper stills. The distillery uses a combination of American bourbon casks and Spanish sherry casks to mature its whiskies. These casks help to give Dalmore whiskies their rich, complex character.

Dalmore offers a diverse range of whiskies, from classic expressions to limited editions and special bottlings. Some of their best-known whiskies include Dalmore 12-Year-Old, Dalmore 15 Year Old, Dalmore 18 Year Old and Dalmore Cigar Malt. Each expression has its own distinct characteristics, but they often share notes of fruit, chocolate, and spice.

The distillery also produces limited editions and rare whiskies, which are highly prized by collectors and whisky lovers. These can be aged for long periods and are often presented in elegant, luxurious bottles.

Finally, one of the House's signature features is the use of world-renowned sherry casks for maturation. This often gives the whiskies a fruity sweetness, as well as rich, delicate aromas and flavours. In addition, some Dalmore expressions are also finished in Port or Marsala wine casks, adding an extra dimension to the flavour profiles.
