AJ Fernandez New World Dorado

Abdel J. Fernandez, a native of San Luis, Cuba, was introduced to the rich tradition and heritage of tobacco at an early age. Indeed, his father, Ismael, and his uncle both worked for the Cuban government's agricultural department specialized in tobacco. At the age of 13, his passion and interest led him to go, every day after school, to the tobacco farms, called "Finca" in his native language. In 2003, he decided to leave his native country to join Nicaragua, where he will officially start his prodigious career.

At the beginning, he will establish himself as a manufacturer for various brands such as Rocky Patel or Diesel before starting to produce his own cigars. It is notably thanks to him and his talent that the San Lotano brand, created by his grandfather after the Cuban Revolution and abandoned for a long time, will benefit of a second wind during the summer 2010. He is still at the head of this company based in Totogalpa, Nicaragua.

As a third-generation cigar maker, Abdel has all the necessary qualities to run a cigar factory, including his own: AJ Fernandez Cigars, also located in Nicaragua. Together, these two tobacco farms allow to produce, by hand, more than 100'000 cigars per day! The ancestral production methods taught to Abdel by past generations are still used today to elaborate extraordinary blends, thus forging the reputation of AJ Fernandez cigars.

To ensure the quality of his cigars, Abdel has strategically located himself in the rich and fertile lands of Nicaragua. Thanks to the numerous investments he made throughout the country, the tobacco he harvests comes from all the main growing regions: Condega, Jalapa, Estelí, Pueblo Nuevo, Quilalí and the island of Ometepe. His experience has taught him that to elaborate a quality cigar and ensure the regularity and supply of his production, it is necessary to grow his own tobacco. This also allows him to grow different varieties of tobacco, specific to each blend that makes up his cigars.

The New World range of AJ Fernandez was born from a collaboration between Abdel and his father Ismael, which makes it even more special in his sight. The name "New World" is a tribute to the discovery of tobacco and its introduction to the World, following Christopher Columbus' expedition to America in 1492. Launched in 2014, the line was later joined by New World Connecticut in 2015 and New World Puro Especial in 2017.

The cigar we're interested in today, the AJ Fernandez New World Dorado, is the brand's most recent creation and was launched in July 2022. It refers to the tobacco farm of the same name, which Abdel acquired in 2017. Located in Estelí, its land has a very rare golden hue compared to the region's soils, which are usually a dark ashy gray. There, a part of the blend, the wrapper and the binder are cultivated. It is specifically the first crop of the Dorado farm that gave life to the New World Dorado cigars.

This particular line offers 4 different modules: the AJ Fernandez New World Dorado Figurado, Gordito, Robusto and Toro. All of them are hand-rolled and made from an entirely Nicaraguan blend. These Puros are a testament to Abdel Fernandez's expertise and talent as a tobacco grower and blender. All the elements that make up the blend are carefully selected by him, according to their flavors, aromas and strength, to offer aficionados a unique tasting experience.

Adorned with a beautiful ring stamped "New World" and illustrated with a scene referring to the discovery of Christopher Columbus and a second golden foot ring, the vitolas are arranged in a box of 10, like gold bars. This arrangement is in perfect harmony with the origins and history of the cigars and confirms Abdel's attention to detail. Their Maduro wrapper is totally smooth without any visible veins.

Finally, the New World Dorado range offers rather full-bodied cigars, but very balanced and refined at the same time. The draw is impeccable and provides a dense and generous smoke, notes of leather, burnt wood and dark chocolate.
