Davidoff Year of the Rabbit Limited Edition 2023

Chinese astrology is based on 12-year cycles and each cycle is itself based on the Chinese lunar calendar. Each of the 12 years in a cycle corresponds to an animal. The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is a tradition that goes back more than 4'000 years and marks the arrival of a new animal. Thus, as of February 1, 2023, we will enter the year of the Rabbit. In Chinese culture, the Rabbit is a zodiac sign that may seem calm at first, but slowly reveals its complexity of character and intelligence. The Rabbit is an enchanting companion, with a keen mind and the sharpest senses when it comes to the more sophisticated things in life.

Like every year for the past 11 years, Davidoff is celebrating with a limited edition cigar: the Davidoff Year of the Rabbit Limited Edition 2023.

11 years but it's actually 12 years because the beginnings of this annual series actually started in 2012 with a first cigar, the Davidoff Cuvée Selection 2012 Year of the Dragon, which was, at the time, only released in Asia. Little did anyone know that this limited edition would give birth to a large series of annual releases.

A short retrospective on the previous "Year of" editions of Davidoff, whose success with aficionados has only increased over the years and far beyond the borders of China:

• Davidoff Cuvée Selection 2012 Year of the Dragon, a Pirámide (52 x 152 mm).
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2013 Year of the Snake, a Churchill (48 x 178 mm), produced in 4'500 boxes of 8 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2014 Year of the Horse, a Gran Toro (60 x 152 mm), produced in 5'000 boxes of 9 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2015 Year of the Sheep, a Belicoso (54 x 165 mm), produced in 3'000 boxes of 8 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2016 Year of the Monkey, a Toro (50 x 165 mm), produced in 3'000 boxes of 10 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2017 Year of the Rooster, a Diademas Finas (50 x 171 mm), produced at 8'000 boxes of 10 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2018 Year of the Dog, a Churchill (50 x 178 mm), produced at 4'500 boxes of 10 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2019 Year of the Pig, a Toro Gordo (56 x 152 mm), produced at 9'300 boxes of 10 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2020 Year of the Rat, a Toro (50 x 152 mm), produced at 10'000 boxes of 10 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2021 Year of the Ox, a Gordo (60 x 152 mm), produced at 13'500 Boxes of 10 cigars.
• Davidoff Limited Edition 2022 Year of the Tiger, a Piramides (52 x 156 mm), produced at 17'350 Boxes of 10 cigars.

As since the beginning of this program, the Davidoff design teams and master blenders have once again put all their expertise and know-how into the creation of this new limited edition. The vitola chosen for this new vintage is the Perfecto (54 x 151 mm), because its shape reminds of a rabbit's ears.

In terms of blend, the Davidoff Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit introduces a new blend composed of seven different tobaccos.

Indeed, under the magnificent Ecuadorian wrapper Hybride 238, we find a Mexican wrapper Negro San Andres Seco and a filler composed of five leaves from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua and whose average age is 4 and a half years: San Vicente Seco, Piloto Seco, San Vicente Ligero, Yamasá Visus and Estelí Seco.

Such a cigar had to receive a special box. Not surprisingly, Davidoff offers us high quality packaging. Thus, these ten Perfecto are presented in an elegant red box inspired by the character of the Rabbit. Its lacquered exterior reveals the Year of the Rabbit motif, which mimics the animal's smooth, steady hops. When opened, the depth of the case is revealed and reminds us of a rabbit hole.

Let's move on to the tasting. The blend slowly reveals its depth through the tapered head and foot of the cigar. Seven different tobaccos, including filler tobaccos with an average maturity of 4.5 years come together.

A bit shy at first, it delights us with its peppery notes, which are soon joined by leather notes. It is then that the true complexity of the cigar is revealed. The intensity increases slightly towards the end, without ever invading the palate. A cocoa sweetness concludes this pleasant taste experience.

Davidoff, as every year, takes advantage of this new limited edition to offer a range of accessories, also produced in limited edition, in order to offer the aficionado an immersive experience within the year of the Rabbit. The first, a double-bladed cigar cutter in palladium limited to 370 pieces. The second accessory is a porcelain ashtray, produced in a limited edition of 450 pieces, individually hand-numbered. Made by French craftsmen, it features the decoration of the year of the Rabbit.

From the creation of the blend, to the design of the box, inspired by the natural habitat of the rabbit, to the handcrafted accessories, this new "Year of" collection is, once again, worthy of the pioneering spirit of the brand's founder: Zino Davidoff.
