La Gloria Cubana Alemarado Edición Regional Perú 2020
A cabinet of 50 with heritage dating back to the conquest of the Inca Empire.
If we can't travel freely in this time of global pandemic, we are happy to invite you to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, to Peru to be exact, which has just received a new regional edition: La Gloria Cubana Alemarado!
The Alemarado is the third vitola produced exclusively for Peru. It follows the Por Larrañaga Los Andes from 2009 and the Saint Luis Rey Inca from 2014.
La Gloria Cubana, in naming this cigar "Alemarado", wished to pay tribute to the conquest of the Inca Empire by the Spanish in the 16th century. Indeed, "Alemarado" is a contraction of the two names, Diego de Almagro and Pedro de Alvarado, two Spanish conquistadores attracted by the riches of Peru and more precisely of the city of Cuzco.
We have also found some traces of this period of war between Spanish conquistadores in a work dating from 1650, entitled "History of the Civil Wars of the Spaniards in the Indies". This is written by Garcilaso de la Vega, a poet and military man of the Spanish Golden Age, whom is considered to be one of the major authors of Spanish literature.
The vitola chosen by La Gloria Cubana for this regional edition is Dobles (50 x 155 mm). More commonly known as Robusto Extra, it is one of the most frequently used modules in Regional Editions. In fact, there have been more than 13 Dobles produced in regional editions since 2006. Among them, La Gloria Cubana has previously produced one Regional edition using the same vitola, the Gloriosos from 2008 in Edición Regional Reino Unido.
Usually reserved for special productions more broadly, one Habanos brand does however offer Dobles in regular production, Montecristo with the Double Edmundo, which entered the catalogue in 2013.
Production of the Alemarado is limited to just 2,000 individually numbered cabinets of 50 cigars. This presentation, which is generous to say the least, seems to have become relatively popular in recent years in this region of the world. Indeed, it was already used in 2017 by El Rey del Mundo for the Kon Tiki 1973 produced in exclusivity for "Los Andes". This part of the globe, also known as "Andino B.P.E." in Habanos parlance, includes three countries: Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. As for the latter, the Alemarado are arranged on 4 floors (13-13-13-11). This type of cabinet first appeared in the 1960s before disappearing in 1973. The "1973" behind "Kon Tiki" formed a general appreciation to this splendid presentation at the time.
Let's proceed to the tasting aspect of this wonderful Regional Edition. The Factory Code of our cabinet "BST FEB 2021" appears to be the one of the Artemisa factory, located in San Cristóbal. The Artemisa factory who is in charge of the Edición Limitada production and some Edición Regional productions, allows us to guarantee a certain peace of mind regarding the quality of the rolling.
Immediately after lighting, the Alemarado gives us spicy, leathery and nutty flavours. While each flavour remains identifiable, the whole is very well balanced and harmonious despite its young age.
The excellent draw already brings us to the divine. The latter begins a change of register. Pepper, accompanied by aromas of roasting, coffee and toast, bursts in. At the halfway point, the Alemarado shows a beautiful rise in power. This is supported by the predominance of leather notes and the appearance of woody notes.
Surprisingly, the third is much rounder, the cigar's identity is constant but the whole is wrapped up in buttery aromas, hot cream and roasted peanuts.
The very end quickly reveals itself to be powerful, satisfying, explosive and complex, becoming intoxicating.
Opportunities to acquire one of the 2,000 cabinets produced are likely to be rare. You should seize your chance when you come across it. A cabinet of 50 cigars, beyond regaling us with its majestic appearance, will make it possible to offer regular tastings over many years and thus to appreciate the full potential of this cigar, whose future already looks very promising.
