Founded in 1960, Empor S.A., the official and exclusive importer of Habanos in Portugal, celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2020 with a new cigar in Edición Regional Portugal: the San Cristóbal de la Habana Saudade. What better choice than the cigar brand created by Habanos as a tribute to the city of Havana to celebrate its 60 years of existence and thus testify to the affection of Portuguese aficionados for Cuban cigars?
The vitola chosen by San Cristóbal de la Habana for this new regional edition is the Edmundo (52 x 135 mm). This module is usually used for special productions, such as regional editions, travel humidors or the "La Casa del Habano Exclusivo" edition by H. Upmann, the Royal Robusto. The only exception is the Montecristo Edmundo, which joined the brand's regular catalogue in 2004.
The Edmundo belongs to the large Robusto family, and is part of the new trend of "Short Smokes" which are increasingly appreciated by aficionados. Moreover, the year 2020 will have given birth to two Edmundos as alongside the Saudade, we also will find the Diplomáticos Colección Privada II Edición Regional España 2020.
As far as the name is concerned, the term "Saudade" does not really have a literal translation in any language. In Portuguese, it describes a mixture of feelings of melancholy, loss, longing, distance and love. It is one of the most used words in the Portuguese language when it comes to poetry and romantic music.
Like all regional editions, the Saudade is dressed in the so typical wine-coloured second band and is stamped with "Exclusivo followed by the mention of the country in Spanish". However, it has been slightly revisited for the occasion to introduce the 60th anniversary logo of Empor S.A. as it has been done for previous regional editions released as part of the anniversary (Ramón Allones Sr. Henry Edición Regional Alemania 2020, or the Ramón Allones Phoenicia 40 Edición Regional Líbano 2019). The first vitola dressed with such a ring was the Punch Sir David Edición Regional Hong Kong 2018, named after Sir David Tang, founder of the Pacific Cigar Company, who passed away in 2017.
Production of the San Cristóbal de la Habana Saudade is limited to 8,000 individually numbered boxes of 10 cigars, all of which are destined for the Portuguese market.
