Villiger La Libertad

An old line totally renewed.

Originally, Villiger's La Libertad line, which translates to "freedom" in Spanish, was manufactured in Honduras by Plasencia before the production was moved to Estelí, Nicaragua. Indeed, while it was launched in 2010, a new iteration of La Libertad was presented at the Tobacco Plus Expo 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It features not only a new modernized packaging, but also a new blend.

The new version of La Libertad is produced in the Villiger-owned factory in Nicaragua, it consists of a Nicaraguan Criollo wrapper from Jalapa and a Dominican binder from the Cibao Valley. The filler is a mixture of Seco tobacco leaves from Jalapa and Viso and Ligero leaves from Estelí. The cigars are available in 3 different modules: a Robusto, a Corona and a Gran Toro.

Review of the different cigars:

Let's start with La Libertad Robusto (52 x 127 mm) : Featuring a beautiful, slightly oily Maduro wrapper, this entirely hand-rolled vitola benefits from a perfect construction. Notes of cedar, leather and a softer touch of chocolate emerge from its generous smoke. The burn is steady and produces a solid ash with a slight draw resistance. The strength of the cigar is medium.

Let's continue with La Libertad Corona (43 x 146 mm): this Nicaraguan puro gives off rather sweet aromas of caramel, wood, fruit and a little spicier side of pepper. Its dark brown wrapper nicely envelops the cigar and shows a neat construction. The tasting time of this medium strength cigar is one hour.

Finally, let's move on to La Libertad Gran Toro (54 x 152 mm): This is the most generous format of the line. Dressed in a relatively dark wrapper, it delivers earthy and leathery flavors accompanied by cinnamon and black pepper. Its combustion is relatively slow and offers a tasting of one hour and a half. Composed of the same mixture as the other vitolas of the range, the Gran Toro has a medium profile.

Villiger's La Libertad also gets a new packaging, its ring has been updated to incorporate the Villiger premium cigar logo adding cohesion to the brand's portfolio. The latter, inscribed "La Libertad", is red, black and gold and is accompanied by a foot ring with a simple black and gold design. The box has 20 cigars and opens like a book.

About the brand:

Villiger Cigars was founded in 1888 by a businessman named Jean Villiger in the small town of Pfeffikon in Switzerland, where the headquarters are still located today. His wife, Louise Villiger, took over the reins of the company following his untimely death in 1902. She experienced a huge success after launching Villiger Kiel, the first cigar with the famous quill mouthpiece.

In 1918, the Villiger brothers Hans and Max took over the company and renamed it Villiger Söhne. They then built two factories in Munich and worked to expand the company.

The development of the company was suddenly suspended by World War II. The Munich factory was destroyed by an American bombing raid in 1943. But in 1950, the time for reconstruction came and Heinrich Villiger, the eldest son of Max Villiger, became involved in the company. He was appointed managing director of Villiger Söhne GmbH in Waldshut-Tienen.

Heinrich still manages the company today. The family tradition has been thriving for 130 years. In 2020 he celebrated his 90th birthday, thus becoming the oldest cigar entrepreneur still in business and remains one of the leading experts in the world of tobacco.
