La Flor de Cano Predilectos Tubulares Vintage 2001
The only cigar of the brand available in Tubos!
As we mentioned in our article dedicated to the La Flor de Cano brand, its catalogue now offers only two vitolas in regular production. In the past, it offered up to ten different cigars. Today, we propose to continue our rediscovery of little-known cigars from small brands with one of these cigars that now belongs to the past: La Flor de Cano Predilectos Tubulares Vintage 2001.
Before proceeding to the tasting, let's have a quick look at it. The Predilectos Tubulares is a Standard Mano, a vitola measuring 123 mm long with a cepo of 40, which has completely disappeared from the Habanos catalogue. Other brands, such as Por Larrañaga and Quintero, to name only the best known, also produced it but also discontinued it in 2002.
Within the La Flor de Cano catalogue, the Predilectos Tubulares was introduced before the Cuban Revolution in 1960 and was the only cigar of the brand available in aluminium tubes (Tubos). This allowed it to age more slowly than the others, but undoubtedly better thanks to the aromas locked inside the tube. In our opinion, the latter is one of the most elegant Havana Tubos.
Like many of the brand's cigars introduced before the Cuban Revolution, the Predilectos Tubulares was machine-made "Mecanizado".
The mechanisation of cigar production started in the 1950s or so and made it possible to produce cigars "con Tripa Larga" (long filler) or "con Tripa Corta" (short filler), as in the case of our subject of the day. In both cases, the wrapper was affixed by hand in the traditional way.
The mechanisation of production allowed for larger quantities and, above all, lower costs compared to handmade cigars.
Between 2002 and 2005, machine-made cigars were gradually abandoned. Since 2006, no cigar in the Habanos catalogue is still machine-made.
Let's go back to our Predilectos Tubulares. With the summer season and the strong heat that follows, we want to introduce you to small, light cigars that are ideal for a quick taste.
It is not our habit to present you cigars that are not elaborated "Totalmente a Mano" but this one is worth it, believe us. Tasting with our Master in Habanos.
"The opening of the tube lets out an incredible smell of cedar that really makes our mouths water. As soon as you light up, you can perceive vanilla flavours, almost a sweet, maple syrupy side. It is the first time that we feel these notes in a cigar in such a marked way. The brand usually brings us very spicy notes from the start.
The brand's nature then takes over, accompanied by woody notes that soften the slight bitterness.
The roasted cocoa aromas come into play at the beginning of the second third.
Truly divine which then becomes extremely greedy and delicate.
The last third intensely transforms into a more woody cigar, but above all much more spicy, the whole is balanced but sustained! A spicy and dry taste persists in the mouth, counterbalanced by fresh notes of green pepper which arrive at the right moment.
The dense and peppery finish is a perfect match for our ristretto."
