E.P. Carrillo La Historia
A collection inspired by the members of the Perez-Carrillo family.
La Historia collection, which translates to "History" in Spanish, was introduced in 2014 by E.P. Carrillo and offers a variation of 4 cigars in different sizes, named after the members of the Perez Carrillo family. This line is itself part of a larger series named "Perez Carrillo: Generations Honored" whose main inspiration is the family's involvement in cigar making for 4 generations. Moreover, only cigars from this generational series are allowed to carry the name "Perez Carrillo".
Like all the other cigars of the brand, those of the collection La Historia are made in the factory "La Tabacalera Alianza" in the Dominican Republic. However, these vitolas are the result of a blend in which the wrapper comes from the San Andres Valley in Mexico, the blend from Nicaragua and finally the binder from the island of Sumatra in Ecuador. This line is presented as a box pressed, each containing 10 cigars.
Small review of the different cigars:
Let's start with the El Senador, a Robusto (52 x 137 mm) referring to Ernesto Perez Carrillo Senior, who was a former Cuban Senator. With a very rich and medium-bodied profile, it offers a delicious blend of roasted nuts, cinnamon and nougat. It is wrapped in an almost black wrapper revealing some veins and its powerful smoke is episodically accompanied by a sweeter aroma that spreads on the palate. The draw shows a slight resistance.
Let's continue with the Doña Elena, named after Ernesto Perez Carrillo Junior's wife and presented as a Toro (50 x 152 mm). It is covered with a beautiful dark Maduro wrapper, slightly wrinkled. Its blend takes us on notes of earth and the tasting then evolves to coffee, followed by oak. The finish leads to a softer, creamier note of chocolate resulting in a medium strength cigar.
Then comes the E-III, a majestic Grande Churchill (54 x 175 mm), which is a nod to Ernesto Perez Carrillo Junior. It is an attractive pressed vitola, dressed by a dark coffee-colored wrapper, delivering a rich and full smoke. From the first to the last puff, it offers a delicious taste with a mixture of dark chocolate and leather, complemented by notes of black pepper and almonds. Its power is balanced by a creamy finish.
And finally, the Regalias d'Celia, a Belicoso (58 x 150 mm) that has become the 4th module offered in this line. Its dense and slightly bitter smoke evolves to reveal notes of wood and mineral salts, softened by a floral hint marking the cigar's finish. The latter is dressed with the characteristic Maduro wrapper, grown in the San Andres Valley and forms a medium strength cigar.
However, in 2021, this collection was joined by a new vitola named Parientes, a word referring to family members. It represents the second Lonsdale (43 x 165 mm) in E.P. Carrillo's portfolio, along with the Pledge Lonsdale. Unlike the other cigars in the line, which only come in boxes of 10, this one is produced in boxes of 20, designed to encourage sharing at family gatherings. This Maduro wrapper vitola is not part of the brand's regular production, and is produced in an extremely limited quantity of 500 boxes, for a total of 10,000 cigars.
This collection offers a unique tasting experience by focusing on the strength, flavor and aroma of each cigar.
About the brand:
The roots of the Perez Carrillo family are found in Cuba, where Ernesto Senior was born in 1904. Since his early childhood, he was immersed in the world of tobacco thanks to his father who rolled and sold cigars in the heart of Havana. After working as a tobacco buyer for several years, he acquired a small factory called "El Credito", which launched his career as a cigar manufacturer and made him famous throughout the country. He was even elected to the Cuban Senate in 1954 and 1958.
His son, Ernesto Junior, the creator of "La Gloria Cubana" in the United States, had a real success in the 1990s. This brand, which propelled the family among the best cigar producers in the world, was bought in 1999 by the multinational General Cigar Company.
His children, Lissette and Ernesto III, will then propose to their father, to return to the sources, by making their own cigars, in family. In April 2009, they chose to establish themselves in an independent building of 12'000 square meters in the Zona Franca of Santiago, Dominican Republic. Immediately, they began the construction of the factory of their dreams and named it "La Tabacalera Alianza".
Thus, this factory will give birth to E.P. Carrillo cigars: there, the tobacco is fermented, aged and handrolled by experienced rollers, relearning their profession with a "Cuban style" rolling technique.
Ernesto Perez Carrillo Junior's insatiable desire to offer superior quality cigars led him to establish his plantations in the rich and fertile lands of Nicaragua, specifically in Esteli, Condega and Jalapa. Each of these regions is essential to the elaboration of the brand's unique blends. He also has plantations in Ecuador, dedicated to the cultivation of high quality tobacco leaves.
Today, E.P. Carrillo offers a wide range of cigars divided into 9 different collections: the Allegiance in partnership with Oliva Cigar Co; the Dusk in homage to the creation of the best cigars elaborated by the hands of the master; the Encore which offers a second part to the critically acclaimed collections; the INCH Maduro which honors larger gauges; the INCH Natural; the INCH Nicaragua; the New Wave Connecticut which celebrates the famous Ecuadorian wrapper; The Pledge; and finally, the famous La Historia collection.
