Oliva Serie V Melanio
A line in honor of the first tobacco man of the Oliva family.
In 2006, Oliva Cigars launched a new line that became the flagship product offered by the brand: the highly acclaimed Oliva Serie V, which was an immediate success. To honor the first man of the family to grow tobacco in Cuba in the 19th century, Melanio Oliva, the company created the Serie V Melanio version.
Like all the other cigars of the brand, those of the Serie V Melanio are made in the factory "La Tabacalera Oliva" in Nicaragua. They are distinguished from the original version by their shimmering wrapper made of Sumatra seeds, grown in Ecuador. As for the blend and the sub-cape, they both come from Nicaragua. The blend contains Ligero leaves from the Jalapa Valley, known for their rich and robust flavor. All cigars are hand-rolled by experienced torcedors.
The Serie V Melanio is available in 6 different sizes, presented as a box pressed with 10 units each.
The different vitolas :
Let's start with the Serie V Melanio Petit Corona (46 x 114 mm): it offers a very nice smooth and oily Maduro wrapper. The power of the cigar is evolving from medium to strong as the combustion progresses and delivers chocolate, nut and coffee aromas.
To continue, the Serie V Melanio Robusto (52 x 127 mm) presents itself as a rich and extremely well-constructed cigar. It produces a generous smoke from which notes of leather and wood escape. Its strength profile remains relatively high but offers a great smoothness.
Let's move on to the Serie V Melanio Torpedo (52 x 165 mm). This module, which reminds the Figurado that we will also present, provides a medium to strong spice. Perfectly rolled, its blend gives off a scent of leather, wood and notes of sweet caramel.
Here it is, the Serie V Melanio Figurado (52 x 165 mm): its dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper is incredibly smooth to the touch and has two tapered ends. The rich flavors coming from the Figurado are those of leather, roasted coffee with hints of pepper, making it both a full-bodied and spicy cigar.
The Serie V Melanio Double Toro (60 x 152 mm) is an imposing and seductive cigar. It requires a smoking time of at least 2 hours to fully appreciate its aromas of fresh earth, cedar and roasted coffee. As for the other modules, its Ecuadorian wrapper has undergone a 5-year maturation process before being used.
The collection ends with the Serie V Melanio Churchill (50 x 178 mm) which is the most massive of the options. Aromatic and tasty, it delivers a smoke with chocolate, coffee and mesquite flavors. The result is a cigar whose power evolves from medium to strong.
Like all Oliva cigars, the captivating appearance of Serie V Melanio cigars corresponds to the high quality tobacco they contain. They are arranged in a beautiful varnished wooden box, as a box pressed, which gives them a little rectangular side.
The vitolas are wrapped with an elegant brown, gold and red double band, stamped "Oliva Serie V Melanio", with a mention "Gran Reserva Limitada" which is not part of the official name of the cigar. Although this line is part of the regular production of the brand, when it was launched, the number of boxes was quickly limited, facing the demands of aficionados.
About the brand:
Oliva Cigar is the manufacturer of several cigar brands, mainly grown and produced in Nicaragua and sold internationally. Its history begins in 1886 with Melanio Oliva who started to cultivate tobacco in the famous valley of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba. His work was suspended while he participated in the Cuban War of Independence between 1895 and 1898. Upon his return, Melanio returned to his tobacco growing activities.
His knowledge will then be passed on from generation to generation. Indeed, the process will be continued by his son, Facundo Oliva during several decades before he passed the reins of the culture to his son Gilberto Oliva Senior. Following the Cuban revolution of 1959, he will put an end to his career as a farmer and will start working as a tobacco broker. This will lead him to different countries as a buyer and will facilitate his decision to emigrate to Nicaragua. It was not until 1995 that Gilberto and his son Gilberto Junior launched the brand "Gilberto Oliva" which became "Oliva Cigar" based in Miami Lakes, Florida.
Before reaching the notoriety it has today, Oliva had a tumultuous journey by facing numerous crises, the company was able to survive thanks to the stock of tobacco that Gilberto Senior produced and that rested in a warehouse in Nicaragua. The world fell in love with Nicaraguan tobacco and Oliva made it its strength.
To this day, Oliva is the 2nd largest tobacco grower in Nicaragua thanks to its heritage, but also to its proven curing, blending and rolling methods that have built the company's empire. By 2005, Oliva was producing 6 million cigars a year and was still expanding. In just 4 years, that number has doubled to 13 million cigars in 2009.
As Gilberto, who was the first to plant his crops in Nicaragua, said so well: "Nothing compares to Cuba like Nicaragua: it has all the natural blessings for a great Habano".
